Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils in a therapeutic manner to promote healing and is an ancient art that has been in use since Egyptian times. As a popular form of alternative medicine Aromatherapy is designed to treat the whole person and not just the symptom or disease. It works by assisting the body’s natural ability to balance, regulate, heal and maintain itself.
Aromatherapy is recognised by many health professionals and practiced in hospitals, GP’s surgeries and hospices all over the country. GP’s have been referring patients to complementary therapist since 1992. Quite simply they know that aromatherapy works.
Essential oils are highly concentration parts of plants obtained by either distillation, cold pressing or occasionally by solvent extraction. The oils are obtained from flowers, leaves, roots, peel, resin or bark and once extracted carry high concentrations of the plant’s healing properties which when massaged into the skin can deliver their beneficial healing powers to us.
When absorbed through the skin, the oils effect the body in a variety of ways:
- Help to kill bacteria and to stimulate the Immune system
- Boost the Circulation
- Promote new cell growth
- Support the body’s ability to heal itself
- Stimulate organs of detoxification
When inhaled the oils stimulate the Limbic system in the brain. The Limbic system controls Hormones, Emotions and influences the nervous system. When the essentials oil molecules are inhaled they effect:
- Heart rate
- Stress levels
- Blood pressure
What happens during a treatment?
After a thorough consultation to establish medical history, current health and lifestyle, we’ll discuss your individual requirements and I will select a personalised blend of essential oils just for you. Treatment is performed laying down. Whether you would like just a back, neck and shoulder massage or full body massage or something more tailored to your needs, you can choose 45, 60 or 90 minute massage for a bespoke treatment. I can also blend an aftercare product for you depending on your needs as a massage oil, body or face cream.
If your interested in the therapeutic benefits of the oils and not wanting a massage I also provide consultations for bespoke blended products for massage, body cream, bath or inhalation.
